Workshop on net-zero targets in the agrifood sector
On 5 June 2025, the NewClimate Institute hosted an expert exchange on corporate accountability in the agrifood sector, bringing together researchers, civil society organisations, and policy experts to discuss findings from the 2025 Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor (CCRM).
The discussion examined climate commitments and disclosure practices of major agrifood companies—Danone, Mars, Nestlé, PepsiCo, and JBS—highlighting concerns around limited transparency in emissions reporting and the increasing reliance on unspecified land-based carbon removals. Participants also noted significant transition gaps, including the lack of absolute targets for shifting to plant-based proteins, weak commitments on food loss and waste, and limited action on fertiliser-related emissions.
The exchange also explored emerging issues such as the use of Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) and the growing role of carbon dioxide removals (CDR) in corporate climate strategies, raising questions about traceability, credibility, and the risk of greenwashing.
Participants from academia, civil society, and research organisations shared ongoing initiatives and identified opportunities for stronger collaboration on corporate accountability, food system transformation, and upcoming climate governance developments, including evolving guidance under the GHG Protocol and SBTi frameworks.
